A product life cycle is a series of stages through which a product passes. Older, long-established products eventually become less popular, while in contrast, the demand for new, more modern goods usually increases. When products reach what is called the maturity stage, it is time to introduce new marketing methods or products to ensure the continuation of product sales. There are three effective methods used to overcome this problem.

The first method is to launch a new version of the product and appeal to new customers. This is commonly used on well-established brands and products. Companies will make small alterations and improvements to win over new customers. Let’s think about a soda company, for example. When one beverage reaches maturity and market saturation, marketing managers and sales managers devise new products. These products might include sugar-free sodas and diet sodas that appeal to a more health-conscious consumer.

A second method used is to release a related product. These are goods that are used in conjunction with existing products. Companies will create new, related products to appeal to the existing customer base in hopes of increasing sales. For example, a tractor company that manufactures farm and construction equipment might also sell boots. People who buy tractors often buy boots as well, so they may choose to buy boots from a company that they trust when they buy tractors.

A final method is forming a business partnership. This type of partnership is often used to reduce costs or to develop a product that one company would not be able to produce by itself. Consider an ice cream company and a chocolate company. The two companies might form a partnership to produce chocolate ice cream. For both companies, this new chocolate ice cream product represents a new product and source of sales.

The sales and marketing techniques you just read are far from ideal.

To begin with, while launching a new product often may appeal to new customers, loyal customers might feel that new products are not as good as the original. They might feel betrayed by the company because they believe it is trying to change something they like. Even if the original version of a soft drink is still available, some customers may lose confidence in the brand.
In this scenario, the new product will in fact end up reducing overall sales.

Second, on producing related products under the same brand name. When new products are released from a brand, consumers expect these products to possess all the qualities that the brand possesses. If the newly introduced products do not match the expected standards of the brand, the company’s image may suffer. Consider the example of tractors and boots. People buy tractors because they represent certain qualities like toughness and durability. This, however, doesn’t mean that the boots will possess the same qualities. If the boots fail to live up to the consumer’s expectations then the company’s reputation will decline and sales will suffer.

Forming business partnerships may seem attractive, but relations often fall apart for one reason or another. Then, things may be worse than before. Looking at the example of an ice cream and chocolate company, let’s imagine that the combination of products attracts many consumers at first. However, the success of the new ice cream makes the chocolate company consider launching its own ice cream brand and becoming a competitor of its partner. Now the ice cream company has a new competitor and will face even greater difficulties selling its products.

Consumer products go through a life cycle and eventually reach maturity, meaning that a company is no longer able to increase sales of a product. The reading passage provides three strategies that companies might employ to overcome this challenge, but the professor in the listening contends that each one is inadequate or counterproductive.

First, the reading states that companies can launch a new product to appeal to new customers. For instance, a soda company might release diet or low sugar versions of their beverages. However, the professor points out that this may alienate existing customers. They may feel that the brand is betraying them by changing something that they love. So, sales may actually decline.

Second, while the reading passage mentions that releasing new products related to existing products can help in sales, the lecturer argues that it is a risky maneuver. Customers expect the products of a certain brand to have certain characteristics, and if the new products fail to meet expectations, they will lose trust in the brand. For example, if a tractor company’s new boots are not durable, like their tractors are, then customers will be disappointed and will consider purchasing from other sources.

Finally, the reading passage mentions cooperations between companies. For instance, an ice cream company and a chocolate company might collaborate to create a new kind of ice cream, increasing sales for each of them. However, the professor points out this may encourage one company to enter the other’s market. In this example, the chocolate company might start making its own ice cream separately, thus becoming a competitor rather than a collaborator.

Though the methods provided in the reading passage seem appealing at first glance, the professor in the lecture shows that each one would prove ineffective or even counterproductive. None of the strategies would resolve the problem of product maturity.

The reading passage explores the issue of continuing product sales when they reach the maturity stage, and several marketing strategies are provided in support of the argument. Although the argument seems convincing and substantiated, the lecturer casts doubts on it for the following reasons.

First, even though the reading passage suggests that rolling out a new version of the product can appeal to new groups of consumers, the lecturer argues that this may lead to unexpected negative effects. He believes that, as some original features might be removed from the modified version, old customers might find it less ideal and therefore lose confidence and loyalty to the brand. Therefore, the lecturer’s argument disproves its counterpart in the reading.

Second, the writer claims that it is also an effective method to develop products that are related to the needs of existing customers. Conversely, the speaker refutes the idea by explaining that the related product might not possess the same level of quality as the main product, due to the fact that it might not be the company’s specialty. This might be harmful to the brand’s reputation and even worsen sales performance.

Last but not least, the lecturer acutely identifies the weakness in the reading that teaming with other businesses might result in more intense competition. He convincingly points out that a company might launch its own brand to replace its partner business. Moreover, he provides an example that a chocolate brand working with an ice cream company might as well start its own ice cream business. As a result, the ice cream company ends up having more rivals and facing a more challenging market.

In conclusion, based on the evidence provided above, it can be clearly seen that stances on both sides are contradictory. Although the contents of the reading passage seem plausible, the speaker disproves them with solid reasoning.

One such proposal is to make class attendance optional. For instance, under an optional- attendance policy, university students could choose not to attend classes but instead study the course materials and acquire the knowledge on their own time. Their grade would then be based entirely on exams or papers. What are your thoughts on this approach?

Claire (student 1):
I like the idea of optional attendance. University students have a lot going on, and sometimes it’s difficult to make it to class. As long as students are held accountable for the information they’re supposed to learn, I don’t see why they should have to attend every class session, especially for classes that meet multiple times a week.

Andrew (student 2):
I have to disagree with Claire. I think that class attendance policies foster another important kind of accountability. They teach discipline and responsibility. Many of the jobs that university or trade school students will pursue after graduation have their own attendance policies, so students should see class attendance as good preparation for entering the workforce.

I agree with Andrew that class attendance should be mandatory. To add to his point, I believe that, while a certain percentage of absences can still be tolerated, students have the responsibility to attend a class.

Taking a course is not just about memorizing theories. Group discussion and collaboration are also part of the learning. Moreover, through interpersonal interactions, students can develop important people skills and work ethics. For example, when I was in college, I did not learn the most from lectures or textbooks but from group discussions, gaining new insights from my peers and feeling motivated by the problem-solving process. I also learned to recognize everyone’s strengths and weaknesses and to communicate with “free riders.” These experiences and the related skills I have developed from them were very helpful when I entered the workforce. Otherwise, I might possess good professionalism but struggle with work tasks.

Therefore, I think students should be required to attend classes and learn outside of the books.

I agree with Claire that class attendance should be optional in higher education. This is because, unlike most high schoolers, many university students have responsibilities outside of school that may be a higher priority than attending classes.

Typically, high school students only have one priority, namely, to attend class and learn. In most cases, their housing, food and other necessities are provided by their parents or guardians. However, college students are in a different situation. Many of them are financially independent. Because they pay for their own homes and food, they need to work jobs that sometimes might prevent them from attending class. Furthermore, some university students are married, have children, or care for an aging relative. Students should not be penalized for having responsibilities that are more important than attending class.

Because university students have other priorities besides school, they should not be penalized for missing class.

What are your thoughts on the issue? Should parents urge teenage children to get a job? Why or why not?

Claire (student 1):
Teenagers should work part-time. When I was 16, I washed dishes at a restaurant, and I’m glad I did. I learned a lot about time management. I had to use my free time wisely to make sure I could complete homework despite spending time working at a job. This is a valuable life skill.

Andrew (student 2):
I would have to disagree. A teenager is still just a kid, and in my opinion, a kid needs to focus on going to school and learning. A job would be an unnecessary distraction. If it’s all about learning responsibility, I think there are a lot of other ways to do that without the commitment required by a job.

Not only did I learn to understand and follow company policies but I also tried to communicate with people with different work styles.

Therefore, I believe that taking a part-time job will help teenagers become more independent and capable.

Do you think that it is a good idea for companies to encourage younger employees to mentor senior coworkers? Why or why not?

Claire (student 1):
I support the idea of having younger employees mentor senior ones. Technology is developing so rapidly these days, and young people are much more skilled in dealing with technology than older employees are. It’s the ideal way for senior employees to learn new digital skills.

Paul (student 2):
Claire makes a good point, but technology aside, I do not think that younger employees make good mentors right away. When younger employees join companies, they often lack the experience needed to be fully effective in their roles. They should be mentored by senior coworkers who have achieved a high level of expertise in their work.

For example, I used to work at an online language school where most of my colleagues were older than me. However, most of them came from other industries and had little teaching-related experience. Because I had a teacher’s certificate, a master’s degree in teaching, and more experience of being a school teacher, I was promoted to Team Leader and became the mentor for senior employees.

Therefore, I think, that with great experiences and backgrounds, younger employees can be great mentors, too.

For example, when I was new to the workforce, my senior colleague provided invaluable advice on handling difficult client situations, which greatly improved my work performance.

While younger employees can offer new viewpoints and creative thoughts, they might not have as much knowledge and understanding about the industry as older employees do. Hence, senior coworkers make better mentors as they have the wisdom and experience gained from working in the field for many years.

Environment Scenting
Our powerful sense of smell allows us to tell the difference between many kinds of odors. These odors are interpreted and processed in a part of the brain that affects our emotions, behavior, and memory. Given this knowledge, market researchers are studying the effects of what is known as environment scenting. This technique attempts to use pleasant fragrances in stores to increase customers’ sales. The results of these marketing studies indicate that smells can strongly influence consumers both in their willingness to buy a product and in the value they place on the product.

OK, so to see how this works, let’s look at the results of a couple experiments. One was conducted by researchers in a department store. They put a fragrance, a perfume, that had been proved to appeal to women into the air of a women’s clothing department of a large store. Then they put a different fragrance that has been proven to appeal to men into the air of the men’s clothing department of the store. Well, the results were pretty surprising. Sales almost doubled on the days when these fragrances were used, so there really was a difference. Now, let’s look at another experiment. In this one, two identical pairs of running shoes were each placed in separate rooms. One room was scented with a pleasant fragrance and the other room had no fragrance at all. Then study participants were asked to enter each room and to examine each pair of shoes. Afterward, they were asked to fill out a questionnaire evaluating the shoes. Not only did most consumers prefer the shoes in the fragrant room, but they also thought the pair of shoes in the fragrant room was more expensive. On average, they estimated the pair of shoes in the room with fragrance to be about fifteen dollars more.

We’ve been talking about social cooperation in animals, the way animals interact with each other. In certain species, social cooperation enables them to feed more efficiently or effectively than they would be able to do if each individual were acting alone. Let’s look at a couple of examples.

Deer tend to eat in a group. Usually, five to fifteen deer will eat together. Why do they do this? Well, one deer eating alone has to remain constantly alert for predators. It has to watch out for mountain lions or bears. So after each bite, a deer might raise its head to look around. This slows down feeding. But it’s different if a group of deer eats together. One or two deer can keep a lookout for danger while the others eat. This means that those eating can really chow down, they can eat a lot of food relatively quickly. The deer take turns, so after a while the ones that have been keeping watch will get a chance to eat.

Let’s think about a very different animal, the honeybee. Honeybees are very social animals and live together in their hives. Say a honeybee is out looking for food and finds a whole lot of flowers. Flowers have nectar, which is food for bees. Well, the bee will return to the hive and share information about the location of the food source with the other bees by doing a special dance. Really the dance is just a series of repetitive body movements that tells the other bees the direction of the nectar and its distance from the hive. This means that other bees from the same hive will be able to go to the same flower patch. The whole hive can get more food because the one bee that found the flowers shared the information successfully.
