整合寫作真題題目(2022年03月真題)
閱讀題目 Reading Passage:
Christopher Columbus is often regarded as the first pioneer to discover the Americas. However, many scholars may suggest otherwise. It is in fact the Egyptians who have discovered the Americas. First, experts were able to discover nicotine traces in ancient Egyptians’ hair. Hence, many conclude that Egyptians must have been the first people to discover tobacco, which is a common source of nicotine that is native to the Americas, and brought it back to Egypt. Second, the currency that Egyptians were using at the time was seen to have a printing of a map on it. There were faint prints of a continent similar to the shape and location of the Americas. Therefore, it is clear that Egyptians from a very early period of time had knowledge of the existence of these Western continents. Lastly, native americans have several ancient totems that are similar to the pyramids of Egypt. Based on this fact, it can be assumed that native Americans must have had contact or influence from ancient Egyptians in order to create such totems.
聽力題目逐字稿 Lecture:
The common belief among scholars is that the Egyptians were the first people to discover the Americas instead of Christopher Columbus. However, there is also evidence that indicates the opposite. First, traces of nicotine were found in ancient Egypt long before the discovery of the Americas. These traces don’t necessarily have to come from tobacco plants in the Americas. Not to mention that the nicotine found in ancient Egyptian’s hair could come from other plants native to Egypt that are similar to tobacco. Second, the map printed on their currency was simply a small mark. In fact, the print probably isn’t a map at all! It could be just a coincidence. Lastly, the pyramids in Egypt and the ones in the Americas are of a huge difference. They may have relatively similar shapes, but the purpose, function, and details on its construction are all factors that separate them. Overall, to conclude that Egyptians are the first to discover the Americas is far-fetched.

問題:
Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage. (2022年03月真題)
👩🦱整合寫作台灣老師滿分示範範文- 全文(字數:327字)
The reading passage explores the issue of whether the Egyptians discovered the Americas before Christopher Columbus, and several reasons are provided in support of the argument. Although the statement of the argument seems convincing and substantiated, the lecturer casts doubts on it for the following reasons.
First, even though the reading passage cites the nicotine present in the hair of ancient Egyptians as proof that they were the first ones to have discovered tobacco from the new world, the lecturer points out that the substance was found in Egypt long before the discovery of the Americas. It doesn’t necessarily have to come from tobacco plants in the Americas. It’s also possible that the stuff may have come from other native plants similar to tobacco.
Second, the writer claims that the currency used in Egypt at the time bore some kind of figure on it, with indistinct images of a continent like the Americas, which demonstrates their knowledge of the place. Conversely, the speaker refutes the statement by providing a solid reason that the map the reading passage mentioned was merely a tiny mark, not even definitely a map. The similarities of the image on the ancient Egyptian coins and the states of the Americas identified by the writer could simply be coincidental, and not conclusive at all.
Last but not least, while the author makes the assumption that the resemblance of some ancient native American totems to the Egyptian pyramids is evidence of the former being influenced by the latter, the lecturer convincingly exposes the weakness in the text by observing that the pyramids in Egypt and the ones in the Americas are immensely different. As a result, the conclusion that Egyptians discovered the New World first cannot be supported.
All in all, based on the reasoning shown above, it can be clearly seen that stances on both sides are paradoxical. Although the contents in the reading passage seem plausible, the speaker disproves them by solid reasons.

The reading passage explores the idea that Egyptians were the first people to discover the Americas. Although the statement of the argument seems convincing and substantiated, the lecturer casts doubts on it for the following reasons.
First, the reading passage argues that the presence of nicotine in ancient Egyptians’ hair is proof they made early contact with the Americas. The speaker refutes this claim by indicating that nicotine had been present in Egypt long before the Americas were discovered. The speaker also suggests that the nicotine could have been sourced from something other than a North American tobacco plant.
Second, the reading passage falsely correlates a mark on Egyptian currency to a map of the Americas. It claims that the mark on the currency is a faint print of a continent that resembles the Americas. The speaker indicates that the mark was very small and not actually a map; rather, it was likely a coincidence.
Finally, the reading passage suggests that Native American totems resemble the Egyptian pyramids, and as a result, demonstrate that the two civilizations have made contact at some point. However, the speaker claims that, while the shapes are similar, there are significant differences in the function, purpose, and details of Native American totems that suggest the reading passage makes a false correlation.
Based on the reasoning shown above, it is clear that there is a discrepancy between the accounts of the reading and the listening passages. Although the contents in the reading passage seem plausible, the speaker disproves them through solid reasoning.

獨立寫作真題 題目(2022年03月真題)
問題:
Imagine that you are considering taking action to improve your performance in order to get better grades (marks) at school or to get a promotion and higher pay at work. You are considering the following two actions.
Doing additional work or extra assignments beyond what is required
Participating more actively and contributing your own ideas more frequently in group discussions.
Which ONE of these two actions do you think would be MORE helpful for improving your performance? Why?(2022年03月真題)
👩🦱獨立寫作台灣老師滿分示範範文- 全文 (字數:460字)
When it comes to getting more satisfying results at school or at work, answers can vary considerably from individual to individual. Some argue that one should go the extra mile, doing more than what is expected, while others believe that being more involved and sharing more in a group is the right answer. While both sides seem convincing and plausible, my personal experiences have led me to conclude that the latter will more significantly raise your game academically and professionally.
First, investing more time and energy in group work helps us to learn from others. While doing additional work might allow you to learn more about a subject at school or a project at work on your own, being more active in group discussions gives you a chance to learn from classmates or coworkers who may have more knowledge and experience than you. Take myself as an example: when I was in college, I took a translation course, and the peer critique sessions in class were of immense value to me. Even though it was hard for me to see the problems in my own homework, different people in the class with their fresh perspective and different backgrounds and expertise could give me constructive feedback and improve my translated work. If I had invested the time instead doing extra assignments, translating more texts than what the professor prescribed, I would still have struggled to identify my own weakness, and would most likely have replicate the same mistakes in all the additional work.
Second, investing more in team work allows you to build up people skills, which are extremely beneficial both on campus or in the workplace. If we desire better results either at school or at work, knowing how to work with people is often more essential than knowledge about our field. For example, when I first became a teacher, even though I knew my subject well, I did not know how to interact with my students or their parents at all. However, in the weekly meetings with my fellow teachers, I was able to learn from their input and advice. After a while, the supervisor saw my willingness to accept and profit from feedback from the others and my commitment to offer my own insight to the team in these discussions, and she gradually trusted me with more classes and more responsibilities at the school.
In conclusion, given the reasons mentioned above, I strongly believe that taking a more active role in group discussions is the way to impress teachers or employers, in order to get higher marks or get ahead in your profession. That is not to say other opinions are completely out of merit. However, I believe I have substantiated reasons to support my point of view.

Individuals use several strategies to improve their performance at school or in a job. Two commonly-used strategies are (1) completing additional work beyond the requirements, and (2) more actively participating and contributing ideas in group discussions. While the strategy employed depends on the situation, it is more helpful to improve your performance by more actively participating in group discussions.
First, contributing your ideas to group discussions is a valuable source of feedback. The group will discuss your ideas, and you will receive constructive criticism on them, which leads to new insights and even better ideas. In the future, you will know what details to include or exclude from your ideas. Being able to more thoroughly identify the strengths and weaknesses of a concept improves your performance, as you will need less time and experimentation to discover what will and won’t work.
Second, more actively contributing ideas to group discussions gives you greater exposure to your peers and leadership. If you share ideas that the group pursues, you will receive the recognition. Your contributions are more visible than if you completed additional work or assignments on your own. Also, the ideas you contribute are higher in priority since an entire group is focused on them, so your work will have a greater impact.
Finally, participating in discussions helps you build valuable relationships with your peers and leadership team. The more positive interactions you have with other people, the stronger the rapport you build with them. If you choose not to contribute to the discussion, you will not have as many opportunities to build rapport. Whether you are in school or working a job, you will be able to leverage those relationships when you need them. For example, when you are being considered for a promotion, your team members can vouch for you because of your strong working relationship.
In conclusion, given the reasons mentioned above, I strongly believe that actively participating in group discussions is a more productive technique for improving productivity. That does not mean other opinions do not have merit; however, I believe I have substantiated reasons to support my point of view.

問題:
Suppose your sociology professor has asked all students in your class to do a final project – making a presentation. There are two ways : 1. to make the presentation in class; 2. to record the presentation as a video file in advance and show the video in class later. Which way do you think would be better and why? (2022年03月真題)
🎙口說第1題 示範答案音檔
口說第1題 示範答案 逐字稿
I personally believe that it’d be better to do the presentation in class. First, I believe I am a very charismatic lecturer. Therefore, presenting in person and engaging with my audience may help me get extra points while I am delivering my content. I believe that if I present in class, I will be able to appeal to my audience better. Second, it is really inconvenient to record the presentation as a video file because if I make a lot of mistakes, I will either have to start from the beginning or take a long time to edit my mistakes out. Hence, I don’t think recording beforehand would be as efficient and practical compared to presenting in class. This is why I feel this way.

閱讀題目 Announcement
We have decided to start a spring exchange program for students to go abroad in the hopes for students to learn diverse cultures and broaden their horizons. We realized that many students want to go for a shorter period of time as well as not during the school semester. Hence, we decided to run this program during spring time, which will be relatively shorter than regular semesters, to avoid clashing with our normal curriculum. For those who are interested, please contact the counselor of your department for more information.

Listen to a conversation between two students
Man: Have you seen the announcement about the spring exchange program?
Woman: I have! And I really liked the idea!
Man: Oh really? What about it? Don’t we already have exchange programs during the semester? Women: We do, but that is the problem. Usually semesters are 3-4 months long and many students don’t want to go abroad for that long, you know, considering the cost of living and other expenses. Man: Oh well, that’s true but what about that part where it says it clashes with our curriculum? I don’t see how the curriculum is different.
Woman: Well, some schools that offer the exchange program follow a very different curriculum than we do, and some course credits you take abroad might not even count towards the graduation requirements in our school! So it’s just best to stay at our own university for our major credits.
Man: Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
Woman: Besides, when you are abroad, you tend to choose courses that you are more interested in, which sometimes lies outside of your major. Therefore, I think it is better to do it during the spring time so you get to explore something different from your normal school semesters.
Man: Well, now I am convinced. I am definitely gonna talk to my counselor now about the program.

The school announcement mentions that the university will start a spring exchange program for students who wish to have a shorter exchange period and take courses at their own school during the regular semesters. The woman in the listening agrees with it for the following reasons. First, she believes exchange programs during school semesters usually last 3-4 months, which is why many students are reluctant to be away for that long considering the expenses. Second, she states that exchange schools sometimes follow a very different curriculum than their school does. Therefore, doing exchange programs during regular semesters may potentially cause them to not have enough credits for their major. Additionally, she mentions that when you are doing the exchange program, you are likely to take courses you are interested in, which could fall outside of your major. This is why the woman feels this way.

Communication is equally as important in animal communities. To avoid physical fights, animals may do certain behaviors to threaten each other as caution. Agonistic behaviors are any social behaviors that are related to fighting. They may do physical gestures or make noises to one another to protect their territory, food, or mating partners. Through these behaviors, animals may make themselves look bigger or fitter to intimidate their competitor without having an actual fight take place. This is how agonistic behaviors can be a way of communication and avoiding fights.
聽力題目逐字稿 Lecture
Listen to a lecture by a Professor
Professor: Unlike humans, animals can’t deliberately use words to convey their thoughts and emotions. So, they often use sounds or behaviors to display their intentions. Today we are going to talk about agonistic behaviors, which are a series of behaviors to threaten an animal’s competitor in order to protect their territory, food, or mating partner. Let’s take gorillas as an example. Gorillas display a wide range of both vocal and gestural communications when threatened by an opponent. A silverback, which is referring to the alpha male of a gorilla troop, will start hooting, throwing vegetations, chest pounding, leg kicks, and running sideways when approached by another male. Sometimes, they even produce a pungent odor, which humans can detect from over 20 meters away. All these actions are to intimidate their opponent and to show off their physical abilities without actually getting into a physical fight. However, researchers also discovered that 99% of these behaviors are just bluffs, in order for the rest of the troops, such as the mothers and kids, to have time to hide and retreat to a safer distance. This is how agonistic behaviors use physical gestures and sounds to avoid getting into a physical fight.

In the lecture, the professor talks about agonistic behaviors, which are behaviors that are related to fighting that may display physical gestures or sounds in order to intimidate one’s opponent. However, these behaviors are with the intentions of not getting into a physical fight. The professor uses gorillas as an example. He said that gorillas may start chest pounding, hooting, and throwing vegetables when they feel threatened. They sometimes even produce a strong odor that humans can smell even 20 meters away. However, it is proved by research that most of the time these behaviors are simply for show. It is really just a way to scare the other gorillas away all while buying time for female gorillas and the kids to retreat to a safer distance. This is how agonistic behaviors are a way to avoid physical contacts in arguments in an animal community.

Have you ever felt that you get paid the same salary despite having better performance than your co-workers? Well, there is actually a very good reason why we don’t use the pay-for-performance policy. The biggest reason is that there will be the possibility of contention among employees. Employees who are not earning bonuses may show jealousy toward those who are earning performance bonuses. These emotions potentially create hostile work environments, which can reduce productivity. For instance, if a worker feels that if a manager is showing favoritism towards a certain employee to help him or her to achieve better performance, there will be controversies as to whether this extra bonus is fair. Hence, there should be a standard rule regarding basic salary. As for merit-based bonuses, it must be well communicated and transparent to everyone in the company.

The lecture discusses the disadvantages of paying according to your performance. It states that although the concept might seem ideal, there is a possibility of creating hostility in the work environment. The lecture talks about how it may create jealousy and contention among employees. Hence, these emotions can reduce productivity, which defeats the purpose of paying according to one’s performance. The lecture also mentions an example that if a manager is favoring certain employees and helping them achieve higher performance, it will cause controversy as it is not fair to the rest of the employees. Hence, the lecture concludes that there should be a standard for basic pay and that merit based bonuses have to be clear and transparent to everyone. This is why the lecture says that pay-for- performance policy may not be as ideal as it seems.
